Every year! Without Exception! 2024 was no different.
There is at least one application for assistance that grabs our attention. A situation we cannot ignore as OPERATION:H.O.M.E. decides who we can fund for a trip home and who we must turn away. PLEASE do not misunderstand…our goal is to help every applicant who needs our help. The simple matter is, we do not have enough funding to help every situation brought to our attention.
*During 2024 OPHOME was made aware of SPC OHM, a US Soldier from Pennsylvania that had not seen her family in 3 years. Her family had no idea she was coming. You see, she is stationed in AK and could never afford the plane ticket home for CHRISTmas. That time of year it is just too expensive. OPERATION:H.O.M.E., supporters made payment for a round- trip ticket. What a wonderful CHRISTmas surprise.
*Even more intriguing was the US Airman stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf -Richardson in Anchorage AK. This airman was born and raised on the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The airman joined the US Airforce to serve her country in 2004. She never dreamed it would be that long that she would not see home.
Yes, if her family made medical trips to the mainland, or someone made a necessary, annual trip to Anchorage for supplies (not available where they lived) she would be able to see 1 or 2 members of the family. However, she could not afford the $1500 - $1700 plane ticket home for a visit or for CHRISTmas. TEN YEARS – NO Family gatherings, No Family CHRISTmas, NO VISIT HOME. Talk about HOMEsick.
The dedicated donors of OPERATION:H.O.M.E. did it again. SSGT Mountain was able to go home for CHRISTmas. It was a great Homecoming.
*Finally, US NAVY Submariner Boblett joined the service of our country to follow his father’s lead. The junior Boblett enlisted for service during 2017. After training, his stations led him to be based in the south Pacific. The cost to get home is unattainable.
Boblett’s mother reached out to OPHOME requesting his consideration. Once we contacted the Submariner we stopped contact with his mother. His mother thought he was denied assistance. OPHOME is committed to working with the service member and their chain of command to make sure the need for help is real.
In the process of vetting this situation OPHOME learned the senior Boblett had served 22 years in the USNAVY. While the elder Boblett was leaving the NAVY the younger was just going into the NAVY and the two of them were not able to see each other. Since 2017 the family has been able to see each other just once for a few days. OPERATION:H.O.M.E. supporters with the help of Wilson Building Supply in Jamestown, Kentucky made an incredible special delivery to help surprise the whole Boblett family.
